Start of term regulations and support for Loughborough University students

As the autumn leaves fall on campus, we’re so excited to welcome students - both new and old - to their new homes in Loughborough. The state of the world is looking a bit different to that of last year but that will not stop us from making the most of the situation at hand.

Young people all over the country, particularly students, have found themselves under more scrutiny than ever before; the final flickers of summer fused with the return of long-desired opportunities to socialise has surfaced as a shared confusion over how to navigate the university experience in such a climate.

With the beginning of term, it’s crucial for students to accustom themselves to new government- and university-imposed regulations, including all the support in place to countervail the more restricted version of life we were once used to.

Which new rules affect Loughborough University students?

All of the most recent developments of COVID-19 policy and response inevitably applies to businesses and services throughout both Loughborough town centre and campus:

  • ‘Rule of six’ - people should not meet socially in groups of more than six. Individual groups that exceed this number will be breaking the law and subject to a fine of £200 for first offences.

  • 10PM curfew - hospitality venues including pubs, restaurants, bars in Loughborough will be closed by 10PM, meaning student socials will have to look very different for the foreseeable future.

  • Social distancing measures - the university are putting in place a range of measures to support social distancing across campus, including one-way systems and capacity limits.

  • Mandatory face-coverings - The use of face coverings on campus will be mandatory in all indoor public spaces at Loughborough University, where 2m social distancing is not possible, unless you have an exemption.

The latest figures cite that the age group 20-29 is seeing the highest increases in numbers of those affected by the virus, alluding to student culture being ideal grounds for contact and case proliferation. Students are being asked to consider their part in spreading the disease to older or more vulnerable groups, which includes potential disruptions to Christmas holiday plans for students who fall ill.

What kind of support is available for students both on and off campus?

Students may be finding the start of term significantly more challenging than usual, with a lot of uncertainty still lingering in the air. The best resources for support enquiries are the Loughborough University Student Services page the Advice and Support Service (SASS). Both are equipped to deal with both on-campus and remote student needs.

The university also has an app called LU Wellbeing which you can find on the App Store or Google Play.
