Santa's first stop - your Loughborough University student house.
The end of November signifies three things for us Loughborough University students: Movember has finished, coursework has been handed in, and that Christmas is coming towards us with a speed that might actually defy the laws of physics. The Christmas holidays can be a stressful time for a student; the pressure of the January exams constantly looming, whilst attempting to buy all your family and friends presents with a grand total budget of £20, means that sometimes the holidays aren’t as enjoyable as they once were.
So why not host your own ‘mock’ Christmas in your student house or flat this year? Clear out the living room, set up a table for your Christmas dinner, and decorate the place into your own mini winter wonderland! Christmas can come early, and it can bring with it the cheap novelty presents and drinking games that only students could possibly enjoy. You can have fun without feeling guilty for not revising, and you can spend some quality time with your friends in the comfort of your own student accommodation before you all depart on your separate ways for the Christmas holidays.
All you need is a group of friends and a loose yet structured plan for the preparations. For example, you will need to purchase food, decorations, and other Christmassy items such as crackers and a card or board game, so it would be good to devise this ahead of the day. To spice up the Christmas feel, you could even organise a mini secret Santa between your friends - but make sure to agree on a budget ahead of time so that no one ends up breaking the bank!
On the day of the ‘mock’ Christmas itself, light up some gingerbread scented candles and turn on a Christmas party playlist to set the tone – if you’re Christmas is going to end with some drinks, at least you can say that some of it was classy! Start preparing the food early and whilst it’s cooking play some games or have a few drinks, it might also be the perfect time to exchange your secret Santa’s and share a few laughs. When the food is ready, set the table and enjoy - crackers should be pulled and Christmas hats are compulsory! It’s a great opportunity to feel fully present in the moment, to really catch up with your flatmates and discuss funny moments you’ve shared at Loughborough University throughout the year.
After your Christmas dinner, save all the washing up for tomorrow and relax in front of the TV with a classic Christmas film playing. The years at university seem to fly by for students, so make sure you take some time to truly capture these moments before they simply become memories. Having after-dinner games is also a great opportunity to end on a high, especially if you are planning on continuing your Christmas into a night out in Loughborough town, as you can add drinking games or forfeits into the mix.
A ‘mock’ Christmas is the perfect way to end a university year without having to compromise any revision time! So, start googling how to cook a roast dinner and fish out your itchiest Christmas jumper – it’s going to be a cracker!
