COVID-19 FAQs: Staying safe and healthy in student housing for the Loughborough University holidays
As we approach the Easter break, it’s safe to say that Loughborough students have already had their fair share of uncertainty for the year. From weeks of industrial action to a rapidly-spreading pandemic, many have chosen to retreat back home since face-to-face teaching has been cancelled.
For students who might not be able to travel home during this period - whether that’s due to living overseas, undertaking self-isolation or for financial obstacles - we’re here to offer some practical advice for staying safe and healthy whilst you’re here in Loughborough. While we can provide some general guidance to students, we encourage you to continue following official NHS, government and WHO guidelines.
Should I be self-isolating at uni?
Whether you are experiencing symptoms of coronavirus or not, it has been advised that all non-essential social contact and travel is reduced to the absolute minimum in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
Young people are considered to be prolific spreaders of the virus as they can be asymptomatic and come into contact with many other people in social gatherings, lectures and shared housing.
Social distancing and other precautions aren’t just about keeping yourself safe; they’re about protecting your community, especially the most vulnerable people within it. Loughborough has a very varied demographic so it’s essential to think of the population beyond students.
What if I’m in shared accommodation?
If yourself or a housemate is feeling unwell and/or are self-isolating, time spent in communal areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms should be kept to the minimum.
Keep these areas well-ventilated and disinfect them regularly. Most household cleaning products will clear signs of COVID-19, however bleach can be more vigorous in attacking the virus.
Sharing bathroom: If a self-isolated renter shares a bathroom, set up a rota so that they use the bathroom last for washing. They should not use towels anyone else uses and should clean the bathroom thoroughly before leaving.
Sharing a kitchen: The self-isolated person should wear a face mask, use the kitchen after everyone else and eat meals in their room.
If the house does not have a dishwasher, wash dishes thoroughly with washing up liquid and dry with a clean, unshared tea towel.
Where do I go for support?
These can be very distressing times for any student, particularly those who struggle with their mental health. Despite teaching being suspended, Loughborough’s Student Services remain open for anyone feeling overwhelmed. If you have any other friends staying at university this Easter, look out for them however you can. Find more information on the Mind website.
Can I go to the gym?
PureGym stated on their website that their clubs will stay open but will be subject to increased cleaning and hygiene protocols. Classes are cancelled until the foreseeable future and gym-goers are capped at 100.
Whilst taking extra caution during your workout may mitigate your risk of getting Coronavirus, gyms have been identified as “high risk” areas, as humidity creates an optimum breeding ground for microbes. Gyms were noted amongst the “high prevalence areas” from some of the Chinese data on coronavirus, so consider indoor exercise to compliment your workouts.
